except it was 2007 lol
one of the 27494672782 times we said “we’re starting brooklynati NOW” birthed this song. 2007 was spent talking and talking and talking and talking about brooklynati (our next full length album) but not starting it. we’d tell brick to send beats and he would but we werent crazy about any (for the record he produced half of brooklynati) and I was just plain afraid to make any beats because I knew what I had in mind but didn’t know how to start (for the record I produced half of brooklynati). this beat was when it started to turn around and we got some new brick joints we really liked a lot.
don and I live fairly close to each other in bk so we sat around and wrote to this together but I think we just wasn’t in the right mood to really knock this song out. we wrote and dons verse ended with the funniest phoned-in 16th bar ever and he knew it cause we cracked up when he said it. something along the lines of “stay on your grind but take a break…or at least have time to yourself!” it was like your uncle giving advice it wasn’t even a rhyme haha…
then my original verse?? I was mumbling and there was no real flow to it. something about “I’m telling myself tonight I’m gonna sit down and work on beats” that was a line. say that to yourself right now and try to find a rhythm. aint one is it? too many words! shit was awful. haha….
later we redid it once ilyas sent his verse from cincinnati. I was listening to atliens and got rejuvinated! “like e s, to the pea’s in a zone….” damn that! that’s fly! espn zone! lol….nah but seriously this songs about persistance if nothing else. its donwill’s least favorite, so he’s usually surprised when people like it so much. its not a brooklynati throwaway, we put it on the ep because it just seemed to fit the current state of the group. same thing with “get me inside”…that was recorded with brooklynati in mind at first too.
I feel like I’m rambling now so…that’s that.

This track is crazy, was one of my favorites after the first couple of spins…still, I’ve always felt like the volume of Ilyas verse was louder than yours & dons…always been irritated over that…dope though!
good to know how one of my favorite bodys of work came together.
I always loved that song, b/c it was indicative of you guys’ tenacity and determination.
It is songs like this that create a stronger bond with your fans (at least imo it does), b/c you’re giving us insight on what you have to endure in order to stay in the game and inspire us to do what we love. Thanks for that!
