get me inside!

July 22, 2008

produced by this guy:

okay this is a long one….

I once read a review that said my music was self depreciating.

in 3rd grade my teacher told my mother that I had low self esteem because of my extra small handwriting. about a month later my test scores landed me in the “smart class” but that was wack because everyone was already friends and decided they didn’t like the new kid. that was an interesting school year…I started answering questions on tests wrong so id end up back in the regular class, and it worked the next year…what you said lupe? dumb it down!

the same thing happened in 8th grade and this time they wasn’t foolin with me because I made it obvious I wasn’t trying to be in the smart class and  wasn’t fucking with them. it didn’t help when I came to school with an s curl. AMMO! man the girls had a field day laughing. ahhh…the good old days. I still say the prettiest one liked me because when her friends wasn’t around she would be talking to me all sweet and shit. oh and not to mention the official finest girl in school was my friend because seat assignments had us sitting next to each other. I took that s curl shit out after like 3 days. its puff daddys fault he had me thinking that was cool back in the day.

I said all that to say this: sometimes you have to find the positives and appreciate the little things! that’s what “get me inside” is about and that’s why its one of my favorite songs from the tanya morgan catalogue. I start it off with the disclaimer “this aint self depreciating” because I didn’t want anyone to hear the song and say “haha there goes those tanya morgan guys beating up on themselves again! yay!” I don’t even consider it a regular guy rap, its simply what we know. I’m bragging about having a new fitted cap and having cable. leftover applebees in the refridgerator. my girlfriends makeup laying around my house…which a) isn’t player at all (lol) and b) says she wears makeup for whatever reason. “quarter meal, not a mil, 1/4th of a cup…of noodles”. and don is on it like, he’s happy chilling in the house watching a rented movie. ilyas is happy doing….what he does in his verse (haha). its a song about being happy with the simple things in life.

there’s a lot that goes unsaid in the song, almost inside jokes. the chorus “I’m coming through….if you can get me inside!”. is an ode to people saying they will come to your show/event and support….as long as you can put them on the guest list aka “get them inside”. I’ve done it a million times myself only because shoot…some of these rap shows are expensive! especially if you just want to see your homey and he only has 10 minutes! that ties in with the verses because there’s a “broke rapper” undertone. maybe not under enough? lol…

time for nerd producer stuff:
the kicks are from both the vocal AND the instrumental versions of mr yancey’s “shake it down” so the “uh!” is apart of the kick its not layered ontop of it. when you hear it drop out that’s a whole other kick. the snare is from “she lives in my lap” by mr benjamin. the sample is a 3 bar loop and that’s a nod to a tribe called quest (”electric relaxation”, “skypager”, “lyrics to go”). factor the common sample in and I incorporated 4 of my favorite groups/mcs together for this track.

I guess that’s that!

next stop: threemcees aka “yall like this one? nah I can do better”-88

  1. As SOON as I heard the “Check It Out, Uh” at the beginning of the song, I thought that sounded too familiar, and I finally put it together after like four or five listens that it sounded like Jay Dee. I searched for “Shake it Down” in my iTunes library and when I found out what song it was I was very proud of myself… Or realized I took too much time to figure it out.

Although I didn’t catch any of the other production facets.
