Track 6 – Hardcore Gentlemen
this song wouldnt be possible without just blaze. in typical internet nerd fashion, myself and don were on the internet one night on aim watching just blaze tv and there were a bunch of videos playing. i wish i could remember the name of the video but there was this b&w joint that i believe was shot in dumbo brooklyn. typical early 90′s “baldhead screwface” new jersey hardcore rap. then a prince markie dee video came on…the domestic abuse joint. don make a joke about it being a hardcore love song and id mentioned how it was nowhere near as hard as the previous video. the joke then went where our jokes always go…”we should do a song/skit like that!”
literally then and there i dug for a sample that would work and i knew what drums i wanted to use already and how i wanted to use them. theres NOTHING “love song” about that break, and with my sense of humor i was already laughing at the drum loop being in a love song before i had anything else. people always say im doing a bootie brown or imani from pharcyde impression, but i was actually inspired by…who was it, the famlee? i forget, but it wasnt pharcyde. works either way.
i like to think don was doing his impression of dude from the zhane’ single (“oh nooo! the partys over there!!”) haha…he later said i should add sleighbells, so i did, but left the skit a few tracks earlier the same because it was done already. the hook came from a wrecks and effect album. they had a song called “hard and smooth” or something like that.
