got 2 get done!

produced by this guy:

except it was 2007 lol

one of the 27494672782 times we said “we’re starting brooklynati NOW” birthed this song. 2007 was spent talking and talking and talking and talking about brooklynati (our next full length album) but not starting it. we’d tell brick to send beats and he would but we werent crazy about any (for the record he produced half of brooklynati) and I was just plain afraid to make any beats because I knew what I had in mind but didn’t know how to start (for the record I produced half of brooklynati). this beat was when it started to turn around and we got some new brick joints we really liked a lot.

don and I live fairly close to each other in bk so we sat around and wrote to this together but I think we just wasn’t in the right mood to really knock this song out. we wrote and dons verse ended with the funniest phoned-in 16th bar ever and he knew it cause we cracked up when he said it. something along the lines of “stay on your grind but take a break…or at least have time to yourself!” it was like your uncle giving advice it wasn’t even a rhyme haha…

then my original verse?? I was mumbling and there was no real flow to it. something about “I’m telling myself tonight I’m gonna sit down and work on beats” that was a line. say that to yourself right now and try to find a rhythm. aint one is it? too many words! shit was awful. haha….

later we redid it once ilyas sent his verse from cincinnati. I was listening to atliens and got rejuvinated! “like e s, to the pea’s in a zone….” damn that! that’s fly! espn zone! lol….nah but seriously this songs about persistance if nothing else. its donwill’s least favorite, so he’s usually surprised when people like it so much. its not a brooklynati throwaway, we put it on the ep because it just seemed to fit the current state of the group. same thing with “get me inside”…that was recorded with brooklynati in mind at first too.

I feel like I’m rambling now so…that’s that.

Filthier Interlude aka “Place”!

produced by this guy:

so we were in detroit in 2006 after a show we had in ann arbor (we will be returning to the same venue very soon check myspace.com/tanyamorgan for the tourdates!) chilling at this bar. in walks black milk. now I don’t know the full story but I think one of our peoples told him to stop by cause we were hanging out. I want to say big tone was with us too but I might be wrong…whatever the case black is there and he’s just coolin out and talking to the people he knows and us a little, and we had previously emailed each other about working weeks prior. so him and don exchange info and we then went to hang with elzhi in the studio.

now I had been apeshit over “sounds of the city” for a while ever since I heard “duck” on his myspace when he first put it up…haha I thought I discovered something nobody was up on but he was in br gunna and I didn’t realize it til later. we get back home from detroit (and that tour) and I decide I want to do something like “duck” but without it sounding like duck. so connecting the dots I reference our song from 2005′s “sunset ep” titled “filthy interlude aka the duck” and decide to do a sequel to that. I had this beat I started a long time ago but it was just a loop of “place……place…..place….” and nothing else at all for 4 minutes. after listening to it again with “donut ears” (think about it) I chopped it up a little more to keep it interesting, yet still wanted it to sound like a broken record (“place….place…”)

so we record to it (black milk being on it is why I said “I make em all duck like milk and rick dees”) and I think ilyas had another verse that we ended up changing…sent that version to black but didn’t hear back…sent the one on the album (it was a rougher version) and I think that’s around when he got real busy so we never got the chance to make it happen. then donwill runs into black thought at a neauvo riche (I spelled that all kinds of wrong) show and THAT black is like “yo what’s good? when we doing a joint?”…don wants to put him on place and have thought AND milk if milk gets a chance. as you should know by the final results they didn’t get a chance, but you never know what the future holds! I “owe” people guest spots myself so I know how it gets when you’re busy and have to prioritize. for the record though? tm and black thought over one of those “type of shit a nigga really wanna make” black milk interlude beats would be SICK. I can only imagine what ilyas would do on THAT track. sheesh.

I think “filthier interlude aka place” came out dope with just us though. thats my boy filthy gomez at the end of the song because when I told him there was a sequel to filthy interlude he said he couldn’t miss it. so I asked him to do what he does best! haha!

donwill said he has a beat he made for “filthiest interlude” so stay tuned. yep, don makes beats on the low low!

favorite line: “Mcfetridge, the vandals and a true tee, thats it!”-don, because for some reason that sums up the end of that old tour for me. it was a great time in life but it happened because of a bad time.

next up: “got 2 get done” aka von needs a redbull…aka “yeah your new verse is much better than the wack one”-ilyas

We Doin Our!

before we set this off, please peep the previous blog! be there if you can! please!

okay…we doin our. produced by this guy:

I never NEVER ever enjoy making beats around other people. I’ve never been on the “5 beats a day for 3 summers” tip so when I finally do sit down to make a beat like once every 3 weeks (I know…horrible) it never sounds good after the 1st sitting. I come back a few times and tweak and tweak and re-chop and re-play and re-program and tweak some more until its right…even if it still sounds like it took 10 minutes.

I said that to say this: this track came about after I went over to don’s apt and tried to make a beat on the fly. it didn’t work out at ALL, jack. at ALL. I went home embarrassed and as I was en route to my crib I played the original song to this and basically broke it down in my head. I got lucky that it turned out how I heard it in my head, once I got home. I sent it to il and don later that night and they liked it.

the interlude right before this song was produced by aeon (of “walk my way” fame. the song that helped us win that showcase in vegas.) and you hear it a few more times on this project. he actually was making that beat and asked for my input…I took it raw (PAUUUUSE) and put it on the album. he probably doesn’t consider it finished…oh yea, he hates “we doin our…” lol

my favorite lines, based on what was said OR how it was said:

“pea is free they sendspace my bass, zshare my flair, megaup my cuts, n***a what the f**k? itune my tunes! real store for more! you never up your bucks :-(“-von pea (yes i made a sad face in the booth haha)

“all the checks scream my name, in a definite pitch, inner devil in fits, but i raise my level of sense, to seven from six, my inner son and moon are in an eclipse”-ilyas

“check one…check 2, who cashing mic checks? word is bond im cashing in on rhymes i aint write yet!”-donwill

next week: filthier interlude aka place aka “where the hell is black milk?” lol

the bridge!

produced by this guy:

featuring this guy:

we were at the 2007 power summit in las vegas for the xm/myspace “show em what you got!” contest when we came up with this track. we were in the hotel playing music and ilyas puts on a cd by this cat named “mysterious” out of cincinnati. it gets to this beat and I think il was skipping it but I wanted to hear it. we basically did the “head nod in unison” thingamajig and out of nowhere we all started singing “the bridge! the the the bridge!” obviously it wasn’t all at once…on some “grease” shit (haha) but that’s such a classic hook (its lifted from mc shan for the younger cats) that once one person hinted at it we all just knew where it was going and loved it. we then told il to put the beat in the stash and finished drinking. then I think we went to in and out burger. man we took a 20 dollar cab from the rio hotel to in and out and another one back like some real hood rich nig…brothers. all for in and out. one thing about tanya morgan: no matter how many times we visit one of our favorite cities, we act like new nig…brothers every time. anyway when we got back to brooklynati we went to work. elucid of loosie/lessondary fame came through to dons spot and did the hook because his delivery is so ill. now if you don’t know elucid, please get familiar! he’s in another world. don, filthy, and I just sat there hype…this was simply him doing a hook! and this is our boy! he still geeks us out when he rhymes. fanboy shit. sue us. I added the epmd “you gots to chill” influenced echo to the verses at il’s request, turned them down at the label’s request(blah), and that’s that.

im probably not gonna be putting the lyrics, but i love my verse on this LOL:
Von Pea, I’m ahead of the game, I warp zone the microphone, I cheat code the beat,
flow’s abundant, keep shows erupting,
the fans leave like kids with candy,
when I flip a beat they trick or treat,
they in for the latter, the hymns leave em flattered,
I trust it wasn’t a bust,
commute well worth it I leave hoarse it seems,
every rachel and samara is trying to give me a ring,
bling, you are so rich, but you are no “this”,
leave competitors irregular, no shit,
Pea’s a predator, Americas, #1 fear,
a black man working between his ears,
I don’t follow you hoes my woman is my peer,
my weapon is my expression I speak and leap tiers,
echelon devon, the 1st out the limo,
and next out the ghetto and last brother to quit so…
